Launceston welcomes Sister City delegation
Launceston City Council Mayor Albert van Zetten hosted a morning tea today to welcome
representatives, including the Chairman and Aldermen of Ikeda City Assembly, to our
city.
The visit marks the 45th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Launceston
and Ikeda.
Launceston City Council Mayor Albert van Zetten said "We are delighted to welcome this
delegation to our city. Sister city relationships have been particularly important in the
development of Launceston over many years.
"Sister city relationships strive to deepen mutual understanding, develop friendships of
goodwill and establish social, cultural, educational, sporting and economic ties between
nations. They continue to provide excellent opportunities to further the internationalisation
interest of the City across a range of diverse fields such as education, cultural, tourism
and business."
"The relationship between Launceston and Ikeda is the second oldest sister city
relationship in Australia. It began in 1965 when two young people began to write to one
another as a result of an English conversation radio program. On 1 November 1965,
Mayor Turnbull presented Mayor Takeda with an illuminated scroll in Ikeda at a Sister
City Affiliation Ceremony. The relationship has blossomed since then.
"The Macaques Monkeys in City Park and the Japanese Garden in Civic Square are both
a result of the relationship. In Ikeda, wombats in the Zoo are a sign of the relationship
with Launceston."
The delegation visited Parliament House in Hobart yesterday and will tour a local school
and the Cataract Gorge this afternoon. The delegation's visit follows a visit from Ikeda
Mayor Kurata earlier in the week.
